Blackjack Casino Table: Layout and Positions Explained

A blackjack table can look like a full house of lines, circles and labels. Once each part has a name, though, the layout is much easier to read.

This blackjack table guide explains the dealer’s area, the player positions, where the main wager goes and how optional side-bet spaces are marked. It also covers how the familiar casino blackjack table is translated into a video game on screen. For the rules that sit behind the layout, see our How to Play Blackjack guide.

Now, though, it's time to get the blackjack table layout dealt and sorted.

Blackjack Table Layout Explained

Most casino blackjack tables have a curved or semi-circular shape. The dealer stands behind the straight edge, while the player positions follow the curve. Each area is separate, so cards and wagers can be matched to the correct hand.

The main parts of a blackjack layout are:

  • Dealer area: The space used for the dealer’s cards and equipment.
  • Player positions: Marked spaces around the curved edge. The exact number varies.
  • Betting spots: Circles, squares or other clearly labelled areas where wagers are placed before the cards are dealt.
  • Card shoe: A holder containing the cards still to be dealt. Some tables use a shuffling device instead.
  • Chip tray: The recessed rack in front of the dealer that holds the casino’s chips.
  • Printed table information: Text on the felt may show the minimum and maximum stake, the dealer’s rule for soft 17 and the return for a natural blackjack.

Betting Areas on a Blackjack Table

The main wager belongs in the betting spot directly in front of a player position. At a physical blackjack betting table, chips must stay inside that marked area. Once dealing begins, the original wager normally stays in place until the hand has been settled.

If the game permits doubling down or splitting, the extra stake is placed beside the original one. A split creates two hands, each with its own wager.

Some blackjack tables include smaller labelled spaces for optional side bets, such as 21+3 or Perfect Pairs. A side bet has its own conditions and pay table, and it is not required for a standard wager.

Make sure to check the table labels and the game information before staking. Our guide to Blackjack side bets explains how common optional bets are assessed.

Positions at a Blackjack Casino Table

Player positions have traditional names based on where they sit in relation to the dealer:

  • First base: The position nearest the dealer’s left. This player acts first after the initial cards are dealt.
  • Middle positions: The seats between first and third base. They act in sequence as play moves around the table.
  • Third base or anchor: The position nearest the dealer’s right. This player acts last, immediately before the dealer completes their hand.

Each player finishes their decisions before the next position acts. However, sitting at first base, in the middle or at third base does not improve the odds. A seat changes when a player acts, not the rules or mathematical house advantage.

The dealer completes their own hand only after all active player hands are finished. That creates a consistent flow across casino blackjack tables: first base, the middle positions, third base, then the dealer.

Online Blackjack Tables at Buzz Bingo

Online blackjack tables keep the key information on one screen. The player’s cards usually appear near the bottom, the dealer’s hand near the top and the wagering controls around the main betting area. Actions such as hit, stand, double or split appear when the rules and current hand allow them. The screen may also show the stake, limits, side bets and a link to the pay table.

Buzz Bingo currently lists video blackjack titles including:

These are video blackjack games rather than live-dealer tables. Buzz Bingo’s live casino games have moved to Buzz Casino. Game availability and rules can change, so check a title’s information panel for its current layout, betting options and limits.

Blackjack Table FAQs

Why Is a Blackjack Table Curved?

The curve gives the dealer a clear view of each player area and keeps the marked positions within reach. It also makes the order of action easy to follow from first base to third base.

How Many Positions Are on a Blackjack Table?

A land-based blackjack table often has five to seven player positions, but the number is not universal. An online blackjack table may show one hand, several selectable hands or a layout designed for a particular variant.

Does My Position at the Table Affect the Odds?

No. The seat determines when you act, but it does not alter the game’s underlying odds. Rules such as the number of decks, the dealer’s soft-17 instruction and the return shown for blackjack are relevant to the house advantage; the seat name is not.

What Do the Words Printed on a Blackjack Table Mean?

They summarise key table rules. Common examples include the permitted stake range, whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17, and the return for a natural blackjack. Read the wording for the specific game rather than assuming every table uses the same rules.

Where Does a Blackjack Bet Go?

The main wager goes inside the marked betting spot for that player position. Optional wagers have separate labelled areas. On video blackjack tables, selecting a chip value and the relevant on-screen zone records the wager digitally.
